   Kindergarten Announcements

*Special thanks to the Winter party planning committee and all who helped and donated items to make our party extra special. The kindergarteners will always have that special school

memory.  Have a wonderful Holiday Season!

ELA

We read a fun story called The Enormous Watermelon and learned to summarize and retell the story with graphic organizers.  We learned about the letter P and practiced spelling: tin, fat, tap, pat, pin, & sit.

Math

In our new unit, students develop their understanding of addition and subtraction as they represent and solve story problems.  They are understanding addition as putting together and

subtraction as taking away from.

Writing

We continued elaborating on our pattern books and learned to add a surprise ending.

   Kindergarten Announcements

ELA

After reading several stories, we learned to analyze the story elements.  This includes identifying the characters, setting, problem, and solution. Identifying these elements will help us understand and appreciate the story better. It will also help us create our own stories. We also learned about the letter Ff and how to spell the words: man, mat, fan, fit,if,fin

Math

Our lessons this week allowed us to explore shapes by putting smaller shapes together to form larger shapes.  We used pattern blocks to create pictures and counted out how many of each shape we included in our pictures.

Writing

We continued elaborating on our pattern books.

Social Studies

We read a book called M is for Michigan to help us understand our state. We also read about the flag and why we say the Pledge of Allegiance.

   Kindergarten Announcements

ELA

This week we performed our “readers theater”.  Our book was called Baby Animals.  We practiced pausing at commas and coming to a full stop at periods and other ending marks.  We learned several new sight words (sent home last week) and learned to spell the words: sit and am

Math

We described and drew different shapes using dot paper.  We found shapes around our classroom and even made shapes with straws and playdough.

Writing

We learned to use pictures to tell more about the story.  Words can tell us some of the story but our pictures can show more details about the characters, setting, and plot.

Social Studies

The kindergarteners are gaining understanding about where they are in the world.  We learned that St. Joseph is in the state of Michigan and that Michigan is in the United States.  We looked at pictures of Michigan from a “bird’s eye view”.

Science

None

P2: Integrity

People with integrity do the right thing even when no one is looking.  We spent many class meetings talking about this word and put this word into action.

ELA

This week we learned to identify the sequence of a frog’s life cycle using a graphic organizer.  We identified the table of contents in our nonfiction big book about frogs, and learned how to decide what part of the text is most important.  We made a chart about what we know, what we want to know, and what we have learned about frogs.  We also compared and contrasted frogs and tadpoles using a Venn Diagram.   We practiced sight words and learned to spell the words:  man, mat, sam, sat, Nat, tan, and Tam.

Math

We continued with our third math unit by learning to distinguish triangles and rectangles from other shapes.  They discovered what makes a shape a triangle and what makes a shape a rectangle and square.

Writing

We continued working on pattern books this week and learned about new kinds of pattern books such as question/answer books.

Social Studies

The kindergarteners are gaining understanding about maps and that they represent places from a “bird’s eye” view.  We made a classroom map which included doors, windows, tables, and a key to understand the symbols.

Science

None

P2: Enthusiasm

Enthusiasm gives positive energy to you and the people around you! When you cheer on your teammates at a sports game, you’re giving them energy to keep playing at their best.  We discussed that enthusiasm probably helped Michigan beat Ohio last Saturday  :)  This class also did an amazing job cheering each other on this week which really made a difference in our learning.

Helpers Needed

I need 2-3 volunteers on Wednesday or Thursday to assemble and glue the gingerbread houses to milk cartons.  I also need about 6 parents to assist at tables while the students are decorating the houses.  Please email me if you are willing to help.  Thanks!

LIbrary books:

Please check your houses for library books.  This week’s library books are staying at school in book boxes. Please look for any Lincoln School books left at home and send them back to school please.
