   Kindergarten Announcements

ELA

Kindergarteners read a Big Book called The Gingerbread Man and practiced fluency, made inferences,and drew conclusions while reading. We also filled out a story map and did lots of assessments.   

Math

We practiced making 10 with number pairs.  We practiced addition and subtraction fluency and finished assessments.    

Social Studies

none

Science:  none

P2:  Other Person Mindset

The mission of P2 is to empower students to build positive relationships by understanding, appreciating, and exemplifying the character strengths in us all. People who have a strong “Other People Mindset” are able to build and maintain strong, positive relationships with others.

Reminders: 

Kiwanis park trip is Monday! Enjoy these last few days of having a kindergartener.  :)

   Kindergarten Announcements

ELA

Readers are learning to draw conclusions using clues in a text and what they already know to figure out what the author does not state directly.  Drawing conclusions helps readers make sense of a text. Our spelling words are: fox, zap, zip, quiz, buzz, fuzz

Math

Students are counting out a given number of objects and determining the new amount if one more is added or if one is taken away.  Students count the objects each time or use their knowledge of the count sequence to determine the new amount.      

Social Studies

none

Science:  Plant Needs: Animal needs and the changing environments

In our read along, Sam wonders why his grandmother wants to keep an old log in her yard—until he begins to meet a few of her friends. The lesson includes a short exercise where students pretend to be lizards eating ants, and discover why old logs are helpful to animals.

   Kindergarten Announcements

Thank you!...for an amazing teacher appreciation week!  I definitely feel loved!

ELA

We performed Reader’s Theater this week and used characters’ words and actions to determine what they like and how they feel. Then we read aloud using “expression” to show understanding of the text and the characters.  Our spelling words are: sip, did, mix, box, fox, wax

Math 

Students are building with a given number of solid shapes. They are also building with their shapes and then determining how many of each shape there are. Additionally, we enjoyed estimating a group of items using clues to narrow down the possibilities.      

Social Studies

We continued learning to problem solve.  We learned that all solutions should be considered and that people are allowed to express their viewpoint on what is the best solution.  Finally we learned that a solution has to be fair to all people involved.

Science:  Plant Needs: Water and Light

This week, we learned that plants and animals are alive! We observed that all living things must meet certain needs to stay healthy. 

You can ask your child to show you how a plant grows bigger and healthier when it gets enough water and sunlight. 

P2:  Perseverance

Perseverance is an individual’s ability to spend long periods of time devoted to a single goal or set of goals. People demonstrating high levels of perseverance are able to handle significant, sometimes repeated, setbacks in pursuit of goals.

Reminders: 

NWEA testing is next week for kindergarteners.  Please check with your student if his/her headphones are working to ensure a problem free week of testing.

   Kindergarten Announcements

ELA

We enjoyed reading our Big Book, Teddy on the Move.  We retold the story by attempting to remember as many details as possible and putting them in order.  We also identified many examples of cause and effect and connected to the author by writing a letter asking him questions about the story.   Our spelling words are: jam, bad, quit, quip, quill

Math 

Students are finding solid shapes in their environment.  They are also using the shapes to build and create representations of objects. They are using the names of shapes and positionals words to describe what they build.

Writing

We wrote some amazing stories this week.  I am sending them home as I read them outloud.     

Social Studies

We read Talk and Work it Out and made a list of ways to solve a problem.  

1. Take time to think about the problem

2. Talk about the problem

3. See how the other person feels

4. Ask a grown up for help

Science:  Animal Safety

Lesson 4. In this Read-Along lesson, a girl notices all the holes in the trees around her house—and sets out to discover how they got there, and why they matter. The students then listened for animal sounds and pretended to be woodpeckers.  

P2:  Supporting others when they struggle

Supporting other people when they struggle is a critical piece of being human. You support others by listening while they describe an event and their feelings about it, taking action to help people in need, or simply just being there and sitting together in silence.

Please avoid bringing snacks that contain peanut butter.  Thank you!
