ELA

Students learned to make inferences using what they see in pictures and read in texts.  We used anchor posters to make connections with pictures before learning to find clues in text.   Our spelling words are: nip, can, hat, him, hit, hop.

Math

Students are developing their understanding of addition and subtraction as they represent and solve story problems. Students solved story problems by using drawings, numbers, objects, and actions. Finally they learned that “expressions” is the symbolic way to represent addition and subtraction.

Writing

Students continued telling stories using sequence cards.  They learned to write a story in order from beginning to end so that it makes sense.

Social Studies

We reviewed that the earth gives us what we need:  water, food, shelter, and clothing.  We then identified the difference between what we “need’ with what we “want” and made a list of what those wants might be.

Science

Force Olympics:  students changed the strength and direction of a wrecking ball’s push in order to solve a problem.

P2: Identifying the good in others

Identifying and appreciating the good in other people helps you see the world through a more positive lens. And if you see the good in another, they are likely to see the good in you.

ELA

We had a great week with our Reader’s Theater book called “We Like Fruit”.  We practiced the rise and fall of our voice, smooth reading, and pausing at periods.  We discussed other fruits that we like and wrote a new sentence to add to the book.  Our spelling words are: pit, top, cat, can.  Our new sight words are:  do, some, yes, like, we, you

Math

Students acted out and told stories to demonstrate addition and subtraction.  We told stories about classmates playing at recess and then wrote numbers to represent the action in the story problems.  They learned to represent and solve story problems in a way that makes sense to them.

Writing

Students told stories using sequence cards.  They learned to write a story in order from beginning to end so that it makes sense.

Social Studies

The students learned about the gifts that come from the earth.  People need food, clothing, water and shelter which are all provided by plants.  We made a chart to identify items people need that are provided by plants.

Science

In this Read-Along lesson, we read a story about a girl who watches a house being built and wonders why the builders need so many big machines. Students then acted out the “work words” of their favorite machine.

P2: Perspective

Perspective helps you consider what other people experience or feel. It can make you a better friend and even help you better understand yourself!

ELA

We continued to read The Enormous Watermelon listening to the reader’s use of expression to determine how a character is feeling.  We also wrote a Thank You note from Old Mother Hubbard to her friends for helping her with her watermelon.  We learned about the letter O, read a decodable called Pop and practiced spelling: nap, fit, on, pot

Math

In our new unit, students develop their understanding of addition and subtraction as they represent and solve story problems.  They are understanding addition as putting together and

subtraction as taking away from.

Writing

We began our unit on Narrative writing this week.  We learned to first “Think” about our story, “Picture” our story in our minds, and then “Say” our story to a friend before writing words on paper.

Social Studies

We learned that there is something bigger than the United States.  The United States is a part of our Earth and the earth is made up of many different countries.  We used Google Earth to watch the earth spin in space and used it’s function visit green/brown areas (land) and blue areas (water)

Science

Students discover that there are pushes and pulls involved in any kind of work, including the work done by machines. In the activity, we pretended to be a Digging Machine. Students pretended to use shovels and excavators to dig a hole for a swimming pool.

P2: Love of Learning

A love of learning helps you experience new things, make discoveries, and better understand the world around you.
