ELA

This week students are identifying cause and effect in pictures and in text.  We learned that the word “so” is a signal word to help us find “cause and effect”.  We also practiced making connections to deepen our understanding of the text.   Our spelling words are: yet, tip, vet, van, Val, hug

Math

Students are identifying shapes as flat (2D) or solid (3D) as they build and sort shapes.  They are learning the names of common 3 dimensional shapes.  Students were also introduced to the language to compare weight and capacity.

Writing

We wrote some amazing stories this week.  I am sending them home as I read them out loud.

Social Studies: We learned why it's important to treat each other fairly.

Science: Animal Safety

Lesson 3.  This week, our lesson was called, “How can you find animals in the woods?” We learned how every animal has the need to seek safety. When we see animals in the wild, very often they are seeking safety. .

P2:  Leadership

Leadership is getting others to do what needs to be done while maintaining group morale to ensure readiness to act in the future. This character strength’s focus is on the personal qualities of leaders, rather than the practice of leadership.

JA:  We finished and passed out certificates this week.

Reminders:

ELA

This week we practiced fluency with our Reader’s Theater unit.  We practiced reading with expression by changing our tone to show different moods.  Readers anticipate the mood of the text by using clues from the title, pictures, and punctuation.   Reading in the correct mood helps the passage sound right and make sense. We also worked with the letter Yy, and /r/blends. Our spelling words are: jog, yap, but, yell, yes, yet, jog

Math

This week students reinforced counting concepts as they built attributes of pattern blocks.  By the end of the week, students were able to put together pattern blocks to represent equations.

Writing

We are writing longer, more detailed personal narratives.  We are reviewing how to write a story and how to plan on our fingers.

Social Studies

We made a chart about all the responsibilities we have at home and used tally marks to see how many students have the same responsibilities.  It is easier to get along with others if everyone is responsible.

Science:  Animal Needs

Lesson 2 focused on animals and their habitats.  Animals need a safe place to live that meets their needs.  We pretended to be a squirrel and learned why a squirrel needs a home high in the trees.

P2:  Forgiveness

Forgiveness is the ability to move past being injured, and allow yourself to reconcile with the person who hurt you

JA:  We hope to finish the last two lessons next week.

Reminders:

Please avoid bringing snacks that contain peanut butter.  Thank you!

Social Studies

We learned about responsibility and why people do not have the right to do whatever they want.  People have to think about the rights and safety of other people.

Science:  Animal Needs

In this unit, students use observations to understand the basic needs of animals. Students explore how animals need things to eat and a safe place to live, and also how animals can change their environments to meet those needs.

P2:  Humility

True humility is a sign of strength; it is a quiet confidence in who you are.  It requires an honest self-reflection on your strengths and weaknesses, and self-control over ego, arrogance, and vanity.

JA:  We finished 3 lessons this week about making choices with money and that money is something we must earn.

Sarett Nature Center:  We will be leaving Lincoln at 9am and will arrive at Sarett shortly after.  Our program begins at 9:30.  You are welcome to meet us at the nature center if you were not assigned to this trip.  Remember that adults will have to pay the field trip fee of $3.  We have already paid for all students.
