   Kindergarten Announcements

ELA

This week we learned the two big words:  analyze and characters and then learned how to analyze characters in a story.  We learned strategies for analyzing questions and finding answers, clues, and evidence. We also learned to identify and figure out character traits by reading the words and by looking at the pictures.

Math

We played fun math games that included counting different groups and matching the groups of items to both written and spoken numbers.

Writing

We practiced writing sentences correctly, continued writing  pattern books, and practiced finding sight words on the word wall and using them correctly in our sentences.

Social Studies

The kindergarteners explored the concept of learning from the past by looking at pictures of artifacts and a young picture of Mrs. Hartfield!

Science

This week we learned about what happens to our earth on hot sunny days.  We then worked out how to make shade for an open field of cows who are too hot.

P2

Curiosity:  Curiosity is in all of us and is what opens up our minds to new things.  We took turns finishing the sentence:  I wonder……and learned how curious our minds really are.

LIbrary books:

Remember to bring library books back to school on Thursdays.  If your child did not bring one home, they chose to keep it in their book boxes at school.

ELA

We did our first Reader’s Theater unit this week.  We practiced how to read the book With My Family.  We built fluency by echo reading, and listening for speed and pacing while reading.  We ended the week by reading our script in parts and reflecting on how we read.

Math

We counted groups of up to ten images to understand that the order counted does not change the number of images.  We then compared groups and identified groups that have more, less, or the same number as a given group of images.

Writing

We worked on writing and answering questions.  We practiced making question marks and capitalizing the word “I”.

Social Studies

The kindergarteners explored the concept of time by learning about the past, the present, and the future.

Science

It was so much fun learning about why birds lay their eggs in the spring rather than waiting for the summer or fall.  We compared and contrasted different kinds of bird nests and made a nest of our own to take home.

P2

Bravery:  Being brave means being strong even when you are scared.  You can be brave every day by finding courage to try new things like riding a bike.

ELA

We learned to ask ourselves questions to find the Main idea and details of each chapter of a nonfiction book called Rules At Home.  We completed several graphic organizers and made a poster to teach others about what we learned from the book.

Math

We practiced making and describing groups that have more, fewer, and the same number of objects.   Recognizing quantities represented by fingers was also a focus of this week’s math lessons. Manipulating counters, pattern blocks, and other collections to make groups made our learning fun and hands-on.

Writing

We worked on capitalizing the word “I” and adding ending marks to our sentences. We also practiced using the sight words “my” and “a” in sentences.

Social Studies

The kindergarteners explored their role as students.  They learned that classrooms have regions and that all schools have similarities and differences.

Science

Seasonal patterns was what we learned about this week.  We worked in teams and put the seasons in order and learned how they start over again as each new year begins.

P2

Creativity:  It takes courage to find new ways to do things.  But it makes the world a more unique and beautiful place.
